Hornear
Meaning: “Hornear” means to bake or to roast in an oven. It typically refers to cooking with dry heat in the oven. This is commonly used for baked goods (bread, cookies, cakes) but can also apply to vegetables or even meat when the goal is gentle cooking.
- Example: Voy a hornear un pastel (I’m going to bake a cake).
- Vegetables: Verduras horneadas (baked vegetables).
While “hornear” can sometimes overlap with “roasting”, it is most commonly associated with baking in the sense of preparing bread, pastries, and other baked goods.
Asar
Meaning: “Asar” means to roast or to grill. It is often used for meat and vegetables, focusing on high heat and the browning or crisping of the outside, whether it’s done in an oven or on a grill. Example:
- Pollo asado (roast chicken)
- Carne asada (grilled/roast meat).
To specify oven-roasting, people often say “asar al horno” to clarify that the roasting is done in an oven and not on a grill.

The word “sartén” can be either masculine or feminine, depending on the region.
