Pretéritos de Ir y Ser

The verbs ir (to go) and ser (to be) have identical conjugations in the preterite past tense (pretérito).
Ir is one of the most common verbs in everyday conversation because it’s not just about movement—it’s used to talk about plans, outcomes, experiences, news, gossip, and how things turn out.
Ser is also one of the most common verbs in everyday conversation because it’s used to define, classify, and identify people, things, events, and roles in a way that represents permanent or essential characteristics.
So while we are on the subject of ir and ser, these notes also look at their imperfect conjugations and when to use them.
Ir and Ser have the same past tense conjugations
Preterite Past Tense (Completed Actions) and Imperfect Past Tense (Ongoing Events In The Past)
The preterite of ir and ser is the same, so you need to look to the context to tell you whether it means “was” or “went.”
| Subject | Ir (Went) | Ser (Was/Were) |
|---|---|---|
| Yo | fui | fui |
| Tú | fuiste | fuiste |
| Él/Ella/Usted | fue | fue |
| Nosotros/as | fuimos | fuimos |
| Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes | fueron | fueron |
Examples:

- Ellos fueron a la playa. (They went to the beach.) → IR
- Ellos fueron muy amables. (They were very kind.) → SER
IR – (was going / used to go)
The preterite and imperfect forms of ir are used in different situations.

|---|---|---|
| Yo | fui | iba |
| Tú | fuiste | ibas |
| Él/Ella/Usted | fue | iba |

💡 Tricks to remember which one:
✔ If it’s a one-time action, use preterite → Fui al cine ayer.
✔ If it’s a repeated or habitual action, use imperfect → Cuando era niño, iba al cine todos los sábados.
The imperfect tense is also used a lot when describing things that happened in the past eg:
- events
- gossip / news
- recounting something that happened
- explaining situations
- storytelling
IMPORTANT: When recounting an event or experience you need to use two different types of verb conjugations:
PRETERITE AND IMPERFECT.
There are more notes here – Imperfect Tense – Storytelling.
SER – (was / used to be)
The imperfect tense is used for descriptions, repeated actions, and background details in the past.

|---|---|---|
| Yo | fui | era |
| Tú | fuiste | eras |
