¿Estoy invitado?

¿Estoy invitado?
Literally: “Am I invited?”
So it’s like you’re asking:
“Do I have an invitation?”
“Was I included?”
“Can I come too?”
It’s a very natural way to check casually if you’re part of something — a party, dinner, trip, whatever.
“Invitado” is the past participle of the verb invitar — but it’s also being used as an adjective here.
When a verb becomes an adjective, it needs to match in gender and number.
“Reminder: verbs become past participles with -ido / -ado”
⚠️ Irregular verbs have different endings (like hecho, roto, visto), so not all past participles follow the -ado/-ido rule.
Reminder: past participles are found in the ‘have done’ present perfect tense.
When is it a Past Participle (have done) and when is it an adjective?
- recognise when it’s describing a state
(estoy confundido) - and when it’s part of a verb structure
(he comido).
As an adjective
It can often describing a condition or state of someone is in.
- Estoy cansado.
- Estoy perdido.
- Estoy confundido.
- Estoy enamorado…
Or it can describe the condition of a noun:
- La puerta está cerrada.
Most native English speakers don’t even notice they’re using adjectives in questions because we process them as just part of the flow. Like:
- “Are you okay?”
- “Is this important?”
- “Is she tired?”
Why not just ask “Did they invite me?” — using the verb directly?
“When would I use ¿Estoy invitado? instead of something like ¿Me invitaron? (they invited me)?”
¿Estoy invitado?
→ You’re asking Am I included? or Is my name on the list?
→ More passive or polite. Focus is on your state — not their action.
¿Me invitaron?
→ You’re asking did they invite me? (subject: “they” is implied)
→ More direct. You want to know what they did.
Se me invitó
→ “I was invited (impersonal, past tense)”
→ Passive, storytelling
→ Narrating what happened
→ Is super formal and awkward as a question
