Tratarse de means “to be” / “to be about” when identifying or describing something.

Here, se trata de un pequeño y colorido pasaje means: “It’s a small, colourful passageway.”

Treat se trata de as a chunk—the se belongs to the construction. It isn’t reflexive.

Not to be confused with tratar de + infinitive which means to try:

  • “¿De qué se trata?” — “What’s it about?” — is very conversational.
  • ¿De qué se trata la película? — What’s the movie about?
  • About the story in a book: Se trata de un hombre muy malo.

antiguamente means “formerly / in the past.

  • que antiguamente era… — that formerly was…
  • que era … antiguamente — that was (something) in the past.

The usual expression is dar cosa—to make someone feel uneasy or a bit put off. The writer’s «cosas» is a playful variation.

Dar cosa literally looks like “to give [a] thing,” but means to make someone feel uneasy, awkward, squeamish or reluctant. The feeling depends on the situation.

  • Me da cosa beber aquí. — Drinking here makes me feel a bit icky.
  • Me da cosa preguntarle. — I feel awkward asking him/her.
  • Me da cosa tocarlo. — I feel squeamish about touching it.

It works like gustar: me tells you who feels it; the action causes the feeling.

Acceder a — to enter / get into / access.

Here, para acceder al sitio = “to get into the place.”

Hay que bajar — “you have to go down.”

  • Hay que + infinitive — you have to / it’s necessary to
  • Bajar — to go down / descend

Una especie de sótano — “a sort of basement.”

Una especie de… also means “a kind of…”—something resembling what you’re describing.

“the ones who…”

Los que atendían ahí = “the ones who were serving there.”

Los que no hacían nada = “the ones who weren’t doing anything.”

Los que atendían ahí describes them by what they were doing instead of calling them waiters.
