Am I asking a question about the thing or the adjective?

Am I asking a question about the thing or the adjective?
Spanish lets me move the thing I care about to the front of the question.
So when I ask:
¿La película es aburrida?
I’m just asking a neutral yes/no question.
But when I ask:
¿Es aburrida la película?
The movie is already known.
The boring-ness is the unresolved variable.
This maps closely to English thoughts like:
- “Yeah but is it boring?”
- “Okay, but what about the price?”
- “Right, but is it serious?”
The adjective comes first because that’s where the doubt / decision / evaluation lives.
My sister shows me her new shoes.
I can say: “Oh they’re pretty.”
Or I can ask a question: “Ooh they look expensive. Were they?”
This is when the sentence is about the adjective, not the shoes.
So the adjective should come first in the word order of the question.
¿Son caros sus nuevos zapatos?
Sí, lo son.
This pairs naturally with lo
Because lo replaces “the quality / the state / the idea of being X”.
Example:
¿Es aburrida la película?
No, no lo es.
= “No, it’s not that.”
Not “it” → “that quality”.
