A Usual Morning at the Café

Level: A2 | Focus: Present Subjunctive in Natural Use

🧠 Exercise: Find the Subjunctive

Identify all the trigger phrases that caused the subjunctive in the Spanish story above.

✅ THE IMPORTANCE OF “QUE”
➡️ In English, the word “that” is often inferred and left out of the sentence.
➡️ Spanish ALWAYS uses “that” (que), so when you translate to Spanish, you must “find” that hidden “that” and put que in.
➡️ If you forget the que, you’ll often miss the subjunctive trigger too.

The hidden ‘que / that’ is revealed in the English version below.

☕ English

Today I went to the café where I work on weekends.
The boss always says, “It’s important that you arrive on time,” and I get it.
But today, I arrived five minutes late.

When I walked in, he looked at me and said, “I hope (that) this doesn’t happen again.”
I replied, “Hopefully there won’t be too much traffic again tomorrow.”
He laughed.

Then, a regular customer arrived. I’m glad (that) she always is so kind.
She ordered her coffee and said, “It’s better (that) if you give me less sugar today.”
Seems like she wants to take care of her health.

A new coworker forgot to clean a table.
The boss said, “I’d prefer that you do your part without me having to say it.”
The guy replied, “Sorry. I don’t think (that) it is fair to leave the work to others.”

At the end of the morning, the boss said:
“Thanks for today. I want (that) you all to know that I appreciate your effort.”

“I want (that)” is unnatural in English.
